INDIANAPOLIS – Troopers from the Indiana State Police are investigating an overnight crash that claimed a man’s life at 2:00 a.m on Thursday, July 10. Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving calls about a crash on I-465 southbound near the 10.7 mile marker on the west side of Indianapolis. Preliminary calls indicated a car had struck the concrete median barrier and was in the roadway, then calls started coming in about a motorcycle that had struck the car and the rider was unresponsive. When first responders arrived the found the motorcycle rider lying on the ground unconscious. He was later pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the car was out of the vehicle and only suffered minor injuries.
Preliminary investigation at the scene by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists determined the driver of a 2008 Honda Civic was driving on I-465 southbound in the exit lane to Sam Jones. The driver made an evasive turn to get out of the exit lane and back onto the main line of I-465, causing him to lose control of the car, cross all lanes and strike the concrete median barrier. This crash left the wrecked Honda in the left lane of I-465. A few moments later, a southbound motorcycle in the left lane struck the Honda, ejecting the rider from the motorcycle and causing fatal injuries.
The driver of the Honda Civic, 24 year old Edward Perez of Indianapolis was arrested for operating while intoxicated. The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation and there is no further information to release at this time.
The southbound lanes of I-465 were restricted for crash investigation for nearly five hours and the scene was cleared at approximately 7:00 a.m.
All crimes mentioned in this release are alleged and all suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
