COLUMBUS, Ind. – Sandi’s Closet, Inc., a charity providing free shopping experiences for people living with dementia, has announced a new program, the Sandi’s Closet Singers, a dementia-inclusive choir.
Thanks to a Heritage Fund grant, the 14-week pilot program will start on Tuesday, March 11, at Memorial Baptist Church at 10 a.m. and meets for practice once a week for three months. On June 10, the choir will perform a concert. During the musical sessions, participants will have the opportunity to socialize. Snacks and drinks will be provided before and after every rehearsal, and a reception will be held after the June 10 concert.
The choir will be focused on people with dementia who live at home, their care partners, and anyone who loves to sing. Sandi’s Closet seeks volunteer singers who can help set up, put chairs away, etc. There are no auditions and all are welcome. This is an opportunity for all participants to learn about each other and create a supportive, caring community.
People living with dementia and their care partners who live at home often do not have the support or resources they need. They can feel overwhelmed, isolated, and depressed. Studies show that singing in a group benefits a patient’s cognitive, physical, and emotional health.
Participants are asked to pay a registry fee of $20 to offset costs. However, scholarships will be provided for those who need financial assistance so that no one is left out due to cost.
