INDIANAPOLIS – Following pavement striping and removal of the concrete barrier last weekend, I-465 opened its final traffic configuration on Monday, Dec. 16, as part of the I-69 Finish Line project.
Long-term restrictions have been removed from lanes of I-465 between I-65 and I-70 on the southwest side of Indianapolis and most of I-69 in Marion County, including reopening the southbound U.S. 31 to westbound I-465 ramp that closed in spring of 2023.
“This milestone marks the end of major traffic disruptions on the I-69 Finish Line corridor,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith. “We anticipate having all mainline movements open before Christmas, with minor construction occurring the next two weeks.”
Drivers can expect the following work activities through late December, weather permitting:
- Fully opening Harding St. within the limits of the I-465 interchange
- Fully opening Epler Ave. at State Road 37
- Finishing pavement/barrier wall on northbound I-69 ramps to eastbound and westbound I-465
- Complete median guardrail installation on westbound I-465
- Finish median drainage installation on northbound I-69, between Southport Rd. and Epler Ave.
- Placing overhead weigh-in-motion structures on I-465 between I-69 and U.S. 31
The construction zone speed limit of 45 mph remains through the winter. Crews will spend the winter months removing traffic devices and equipment. Minor work will resume in the spring including tree plantings, placement of sod, grading, fence installation, and final pavement treatment.
Construction began on the I-69 Finish Line project in Martinsville in 2019. The corridor officially opened to traffic with the new I-69/I-465 interchange in August 2024.
