NORTH VERNON, Ind. – While patrolling the area of US 50 and the west roundabout early Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend, a Jennings County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputy noticed a Jeep stopped in the roundabout.
He said he observed the front seat passenger exit the vehicle, remove a large American Flag from the roundabout, and place it through the Jeep’s window.
The deputy could see several feet of the flag and metal pole sticking out of the windows on each side of the vehicle.
During a traffic stop, the passenger, Corey Tyler Covington-Ernstes, allegedly admitted to stealing the American flag. He was taken into custody and transported to the Jennings County Jail on theft charges.
JCSO says the flag was returned to its original location.
Tom Moore, of the Jennings County Avenue of Flags, said they have had over 20 flags stolen this year.
