COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Animal Care Services has announced that the Capital Campaign for a new 21,000 square foot building has officially begun.
While city funds will be used for the building, Mark and Wendy Elwood have donated $1 million for the new facility. The public is being asked to match this amount to reach the remaining funding needed.
This new building will replace the 1987 structure, which has only 4,900 square feet. Built 38 years ago to house 22 dogs and 40 cats and designed to be expanded ten years later, the current shelter routinely averages more than double that capacity and is costly to maintain.
The planned facility will provide appropriate housing and ventilation to meet today’s current standards and will be able to accommodate 86 cats and 66 dogs. It will boast a reception area, a larger medical intake area, meet and greet rooms for all species, adequate office space for employees, and volunteer spaces.
