COLUMBUS, Ind. –The Columbus Fire Department is proud to announce the arrival of a new fire and emergency services engine.
Columbus Firefighters will host a dedication ceremony at Columbus Fire Station 1, 1101 Jackson St, on Thursday, August 7, at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 PM and will last approximately thirty minutes. Traditionally, this ceremony is held at the fire station that is receiving the new fire apparatus. Due to the limited parking availability at Fire Station 4, Fire Station 1 was selected as the ceremony site. Parking lot and street-side parking is available at Fire Station 1. Within the fire service, this event is commonly referred to as a “Wet Down and Push-in” ceremony. This tradition goes back to the era when fire pumpers were powered by hand.
The new Engine 4 is a custom eMax Typhoon Rescue Pumper manufactured by E-One. The 2025 Pumper can carry up to four firefighters and is outfitted with a full complement of firefighting equipment as well as advanced life support medical and trauma equipment. The City of Columbus purchased the engine through an investment of approximately $740,848.00.
The pumper was custom-manufactured for the Columbus Fire Department following specifications brought forth by an internal fire department apparatus committee. The committee, comprised of firefighters, fire officers and fire department administration, dedicated time and research to design a pumper that will fit the needs of the City of Columbus. Equipped with a Cummins ISL 450 HP Engine, Engine 4 has a 530-gallon portable water supply and can pump 1500 gallons of water per minute.
The apparatus currently designated as Engine 4, a 2000 KME Pumper, will be reassigned as a reserve apparatus.
