NORTH VERNON, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation awarded a nearly $4 million bike and pedestrian trail grant to the City of North Vernon.
North Vernon applied for a bike and pedestrian trail grant through the Federal Highway Administration to accomplish “Project: Connectivity” in February 2024. This project’s focus has been to create better connections to Tripton Park from downtown and North Vernon neighborhoods.
Some examples are connecting downtown to Quarry Adventure Park north of downtown and trail connections downtown between City Park and Tripton Park, with future potential to connect to Jennings County Public Library.
North Vernon Mayor Shawn Gerkin announced on the City of North Vernon Facebook Page on Wednesday that $3,937,920 had been awarded with this 80/20 grant and plans to leverage the funding to help bring more assets to the city.
Mayor Gerkin stated, “The City of North Vernon has undertaken significant improvements to enhance our community, including the development of Tripton Park, the Muscatatuck Trail, the North Vernon City Park, the Quarry Adventure Park, and our downtown Stellar Plaza. Recognizing the importance of accessibility, we are committed to making these amenities more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly.”
