COLUMBUS, Ind. – Last Thursday, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) took Tanner Vandeman, 24 of Columbus, into custody on the preliminary charge of voyeurism after he was reportedly recording an eight-year-old girl in the shower at a local fitness gym.
The suspect was incarcerated at the Bartholomew County Jail. Criminal Investigations Division detectives continued to investigate. They applied for, and were granted, a 72-hour hold for Vandeman on Friday, May 9.
Investigators also obtained a search warrant for the recording devices that were taken when he was arrested. After reviewing the evidence and working with the Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office, formal charges of child exploitation (level 4 felony) and voyeurism (level 6 felony) were filed in Bartholomew County Superior Court I on Wednesday, May 14.
Vandeman remains in jail on a $275,000 bond and a Johnson County arrest warrant. The investigation is ongoing, and there is a potential for additional charges.
All charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
