COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and other emergency personnel responded Monday to an incident where a pickup truck ran off the road and ended up partially submerged in a lake. The incident happened in the 8000 block of W. Old Nashville Rd., at around 3:45 p.m.
A witness told BCSO deputies that they saw the truck strike a mailbox on the north side of the roadway. The pickup then turned south where it traveled across a yard and through the carport of a residence. It then crashed off an elevated deck, through a fence, continued down a hill, and across a lakeside dock before coming to a rest partially submerged in the water.
Area residents tried to help the driver. When emergency personnel arrived the driver was removed from the vehicle. Medical aid was provided but the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
It is initially believed that the driver possibly suffered a medical episode resulting in the accident.
The investigation is ongoing. Updates and the driver’s identity will be released later.
